The Principal of Dialogue Girls College in Kaduna Mrs Sakinat Nasir has advocated the enactment of a law to prohibit underage children from using internet.

Speaking at the 4th Annual Speech and Prize Giving Day and 2nd JSS 3 high school graduation ceremony of the College in Kaduna, Mrs Nasir said internet use had negative influence on students and lamented that the rate at which children were visiting internet platforms such as facebook, instagram, whatsapp and snapchat was increasing alarmingly and the habit was causing distraction and affecting their academic performances.

“The greatest challenge we encountered this school year was the influence of the social media on our students as many of them got repeatedly distracted by the numerous platforms,” she said.

She said her college had made a law barring students from coming to the school with handsets and iPad, among others.

She said the College, the first Islamic Girls College in Kaduna, offered a combination of Islamic and Western education “to produce the 21st Century women that will be morally and academically sound.”

Also commenting, the Sole Administrator of the College, Mallam Dikko Shehu said the college board was alarmed by the manner Nigerian students used internet facilities for negative purposes. “This trend has to be checked with all urgency,” he stressed.
