Mother accused of theft remanded in prison with five-month-old baby

An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun State on Wednesday remanded in prison a businesswoman, Uche Portia, with her five-month-old baby, pending the perfection of her bail condition.

Portia, 29, is facing a charge of fraud and stealing.

The magistrate, Mrs. Dorcas Ajiboye, had granted the accused N200,000 bail, with one surety in like sum.

Ajiboye said the surety must swear to an affidavit of means and must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

In addition, the surety must produce three-year tax clearance and provide two recent passport photographs.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Osanyintuyi, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 16 at Igboye House, Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi said the accused fraudulently obtained N335,000 from the complainant, Mrs. Oluwaseyi Sijuwade, with a promise to supply her 50 bags of rice, but failed to do so.

The offence contravened sections 383, 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

The accused pleaded ‘not guilty’ and her lawyer, Mr. Ben Adiereje, urged the court to grant bail on liberal terms, saying she will not jump bail.

The case has been adjourned until September 1 for hearing. (NAN)
