A 59-year-old lawyer, Nina Lawani, was yesterday arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, for allegedly assaulting a colleague.

Lawani, who resides at 6, Shomolu Road, Dolphin Estate Ikoyi, was arraigned before Magistrate O. M. Ajayi.

The defendant is facing a count charge of assault preferred against her by the Police.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against her.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Daniel Ighodalo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on November 18.

He said the incident happened at about 11:12a.m. at Igbosere Magistrate’s Court.

Ighodalo said Lawani unlawfully slapped one Helen Ibeji during an argument over a brief.

According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Section 170 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

Section 170 prescribes one year imprisonment for any offender convicted of assault.

Counsel to the defendant, Vincent Usman, urged the court to grant the defendant bail on self-recognition.

“I pray that the court should grant the defendant bail on self-recognition because she is a member of the legal profession, who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1991,” he said.

Magistrate Ajayi, however, admonished the lawyers, saying their behaviour was disgraceful.

She said: “It is disgraceful for counsel to fight. This sort of behaviour brings the legal profession to disrepute.”

Ajayi granted Lawani bail on self-recognition and adjourned the case to December 18 for mention.
