Commotion Among Delegates As Court halts Sports Federations Re-run Elections

There was commotion today in Abuja  among delegates who had converged for the re-run elections into four  National Sports Federations(Athletics Federation, Taekwondo, Wrestling and Gymnastic Federations)  as a court injunction  postponed the ongoing elections indefinitely.  The re-run elections had been shifted three times(July 13, 15, 19).

However, as  a result of this indefinite postponement, delegates are demanding from the Ministry of Sports an explanation  and refund of the expenses incurred.

In the same vein, the inauguration ceremony  which had been planned for tomorrow is in doubt. Many of the delegates are indeed confused as plans have been put in place for victory parties after today’s election and Friday’s  inauguration.

Many Sports Pundits have also lamented the adverse effect the indefinite postponement will have on Nigeria athletes who have various competitions to attend.  For instance the questions on the lips of most of them is,  who will lead the Nigeria athletics team to the World Athletics Championships slated for August in London since there is no board in place?

It could be recalled that he Chairman of the National Sports Federations Electoral Appeals Committee, Alhaji Abdulrazak Salau, had  noted that the the influx of petitions which followed the June 13, 2017 elections at the Abuja National Stadium were overwhelming and needed more time to attend to.

“We have had a beehive of activities since the Appeals Committee gave its verdict on June 30, 2017. The Committee has been bombarded with petitions and complaints from these Federations including Rug- by. It became necessary

for us to shift the election re-run date by 5 days to enable the monitoring bodies including the Election Committees to conclude screening and verification of candidates to ensure that what happened in the first election does not repeat itself.

Fresh Presidential elections were to hold in Athletics, Taekwondo, Wrestling and Gymnastics while zonal elections will hold in Judo (South West) Athletics (South East and North West) and Taekwondo (South West).

All Zonal, Vice and Presidential elections will take place in the Rugby Federation
