The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has called for dedication on the part of lawyers and judges in the country towards the anti-graft war of the Federal Government.

Amosun said the anti-corruption campaign of the government would hardly succeed except the judiciary bought into it and lend it its full support.

According to him, there had not been a better time than now for lawyers and judges to rededicate themselves.

The governor, who spoke at a church service to usher in the 2015/2016 legal year in Ogun State, held at the Cathedral of St. Peters, Ake, Abeokut, however, pledged his commitment to improved welfare for judicial officers in the state.

He said, “There is no better time for you to rededicate yourselves than now that the new administration at the federal level is trying to kill what I call corruption; so, we need the judicial staff, both the judges and the lawyers, to assist in that process to have a new Nigeria.

“A lot would be done to improve on the welfare of our judicial officers in the state. Government alone cannot fight corruption to a standstill. We need the active support of the Bar and bench to nip the cankerworm in the bud.”

The governor, however, lauded the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Olatokunbo Olopade, as well as retired judges, sitting judges and other judicial officers in Ogun State for what he described as a job well done.

In his remarks, the Chief Judge disclosed plans by his administration to embark on renovation of all the courts and provision of necessary tools for the court workers.

He added that efforts were being made to see to the decongestion of the prisons through the use of community services among other initiatives.

Olopade, however, called for steadfastness and politeness on the part of all judicial officers in order to ensure fairness and equity in the dispensation of justice at all times.

Earlier, during his sermon, the Bishop of Ijebu, Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Babatunde Ogunbanwo, charged judicial officers to administer justice with truthfulness, righteousness and the fear of the Lord.
