President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mr Austin Alegeh, SAN, and a former Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, yesterday, tasked Nigerian lawyers to play active roles to ensure the success of the forthcoming general election.

To this end, they urged lawyers not only to participate in casting their votes, but ensuring that they monitored the votes by recording what transpireed in their respective domain.

Both of them spoke at a one-day workshop organised by the Nigerian Bar Association branches in Lagos, in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, on a peaceful conduct of the 2015 elections.

The workshop had the theme,” Countdown to the 2015 General Elections: Are Nigerians Ready?”

Other speakers at the workshop included a constitutional lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN, and Lagos State Attorney-General, Mr Ade Ipaye.

On his part, Prof Sagay spoke on: “The Trouble History of Nigerians Elections.” He called for decentralization of governance as well as make politics unattractive by reducing the jumbo pay received by political office holders.

Alegeh said the NBA had written a letter to  the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, regarding the six weeks postponement of the polls, adding that the security challenges cited by INEC as well as the inability of millions of registered voters to get their Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, were sufficient for the postponement.
