The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Mohammed Adoke, says the Administration of Justice and the Cybercrime Prohibition, Prevention Acts 2015 will enhance dispensation of justice.
It would be recalled that both Acts were signed into law on May 15 by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Presenting the Acts to the public on Tuesday in Abuja, Adoke said that the Acts were in fulfillment of the yearnings for a legislation to enhance the administration of justice in the country.
“The Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and the Cybercrime Prohibition, Prevention Act 2015 that will be publicly presented today is (are) in fulfillment of the reform agenda and a befitting response to the yearnings of stakeholders in the justice sector.
“For a legislation that encapsulates all the ingredients that enhance the administration of justice and one that effectively criminalises acts that have contributed to the negative image and perception of Nigerians all over the world.
“The enactment of this legislation is, therefore, an attempt to bring Nigeria in tandem with global best practices and modern trends in the justice sector.”
Adoke said that a lot of progress had been made in the implementation of the reform agenda of the outgoing administration in the justice sector.
“For instance, we have reformed and improved on our international cooperation mechanism, by offering timely response to request for mutual legal assistance and extradition through the establishment of the central authourity unit in the Federal Ministry of Justice.
“The creation of the Freedom of Information Unit has contributed immensely to capacity building efforts within the ministry and the empowerment of MDAs to effectively respond to the request for information.”
The minister also used the occasion to beg for forgiveness in the discharge of his duties.
In a good will message, the Acting Chief Judge of the FCT, Justice Ishaq Bello, said that effective implementation of the both Acts would ensure speedy dispensation of justice.
Bello said that the Acts would also ensure that witnesses were adequately protected, adequate compensation for victims and would protect the society against crimes.
According to him, the Acts will further ensure that more lawyers are engaged as it will eradicate the prosecution of cases by policemen who are not lawyers.
In their remarks, representatives of the Nigeria Prisons, the Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, gave an assurance that they would cooperate to ensure the effective implementation of the Acts.
