Stakeholders in the criminal administration in Nasarawa State on Thursday called on Magistrates and Judges to promote and protect the right to fair trial.

They said this at a one-day capacity building workshop organised by Right Enforcement and Public Law Centre, for Magistrates in Lafia, the State Capital.

Addressing the stakeholders at the one day workshop, the state Chief Judge, Justice Umaru Dikko, stated that adhering to the principles of fair trial would go a long way in prison decongestion.

The Chief Judge, who was represented by the state acting Judge, Justice John Vikko, said, “We would continue to give priority to the training and retraining of judges, magistrates and other judicial staff in the state for better service delivery.”

According to him, the essence of the workshop was to expose the magistrates across the state to know how legal system is being practice in the world.

He therefore promised to set machinery in motion to ensure strict adherence to the principles of fair trail among judicial staff in the state.

Earlier, the Executive Director of REPLC, Felicitas Aigbogun, explained that the workshop was to build the capacity of magistrates in the state in line with global base practice.
