Renowned security expert, Dr Ona Ekhomu, has condemned Nigeria’s Terrorism Act,ATA, of 2011, which prescribes a term of not less than 20 years imprisonment for any one charged with the act of terrorism, describing it as a weak and bad piece of legislation incapable of deterring profit kidnap.

Ekhomu also urged  government ministries and parastatals and corporate organisations to develop ‘’contingency planning protocols’’ in order to successfully manage kidnap for ransom.

Presenting a paper titled ‘The Theory and Practice of Managing Kidnap incidents’ at the ASIS African Security Conference in Lagos, yesterday,  Ekhomu stated that  the punishment prescribed for kidnapping by the ATA was too lenient, pointing out  that  prosecutors often used other statutes, such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Act to prosecute kidnappers to get longer jail terms.
