The Rivers Police Command said on Monday that it had started a search for the abducted former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Okey Wali.

The spokesman for the command, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt that Wali, the immediate past President of the NBA, was abducted on Saturday.

He said information available to the police showed that Wali was trailed by his abductors before he was seized and taken away.

“As soon as the police got the information of the abduction of the ex-NBA president, we quickly swung into action, with his vehicle recovered along Ozuoba water front,” he said.

Muhammad said the police were on the trail of the kidnappers to rescue Wali safely. “The Force is also determined to apprehend the abductors,” he said.

Also, the University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association has appealed to Wali’s abductors to release him unconditionally.

In a statement correspondent in Asaba on Monday and signed by the National President of the association, Mr. Sampson Ngerebara, and the National Secretary, Mr. Chris Adokeme, the association said Wali, who had served his fatherland meritoriously, deserved appreciation and not custody in kidnappers’ den.

“We regard this latest action as a mistake on the part of the perpetrators. For a man who has spent a better part of his adult life championing the cause of justice and the common man, this surely is an undeserved raw deal.

“It is not too late for them to retrace their steps. After all, there is honour even among thieves,” the statement said.

The association called on the security agencies to go the extra mile to safely rescue the ex-NBA president.
