Ooni: Osinkola set to withdraw suit

The Osinkola Ruling House of Ife is set to withdraw the suit instituted to challenge the competence of Ife Chieftaincy Declaration of 1980 before an Osun State High Court.

The Chairman, Publicity Committee of the ruling house, Olawale Aderemi, said this in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday.

He said, “We held a meeting today and agreed that we will ask our lawyer to withdraw the case in court.

“We don’t have anything personal against anybody. We will instruct our lawyer later today or tomorrow to withdraw the case.”

Similarly, the Lafogido Ruling House which also filed a case to challenge the competence of the same chieftaincy declaration has instructed their counsel not to file an appeal against the verdict of the court on the case.

The head of Lafogido Ruling House, Adeleke Adewoyin, confirmed this.

He said the family was ready to work with the Ooni-elect, Prince Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to develop Ife.

He said, “We have told our lawyer to discontinue the suit. We are ready to work with the new Ooni.

“The court said that we were late in our agitation. Then, we have no option than to work with new Ooni to correct the imbalance in the ascendancy process to the stool.”

Adewoyin, who was a former deputy governor in Osun State, however called on the state government to invite all the ruling houses to a meeting where the issues related to the exact number of the ruling houses in Ile-Ife would be discussed.

He said this was contained in Justice Babalakin’s report on the chieftaincy crisis in Ife.

He said, “That is why we are saying now that this process should be reviewed now. The state government should invite all ruling families to discuss the number of the ruling houses. This should be put in proper perspective.”

It will be recalled that the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Adepele Ojo, had on Friday October 23, dismissed the suit instituted against the chieftaincy law by Lafogido family. She said the family ought to have challenged the declaration within five years of its registration.

Two days after the dismissal of the suit, Governor Rauf Aregbesola approved the appointment of Ogunwusi as the new Ooni of Ife.
