NBA tasks security agencies on slain chairman

THE Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has called on security agencies to ensure that the killing of its Ughelli Chairman, Mr. Austin Icheghe, was not swept under the carpet.

NBA President, Chief Augustine Alegeh, SAN, during a condolence visit to the Icheghe family, yesterday in Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, in company of other branch chairmen, within and outside Delta State, described the late Icheghe as a young lawyer who had high hopes and aspirations for the law profession.

Describing his death as saddening, Alegeh said: “The killing of our colleague is senseless and a sad reminder of the state of insecurity in the country. We are in touch with the government, the state Commissioner of Police and the Department of State Security in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to book.

“As an association, we will set up a coordinating team to put pressure and work with the security agencies in ensuring that the matter is not swept under the carpet because the failure of security in a society is tantamount to a failure in governance.

“There will also be a three-man Board of Trustees to man an Endowment Fund that would be setup by the association in honour of the family.”

Responding on behalf of the Icheghe family and the Ughelli NBA, the Vice Chairman of the branch, Mr  Joseph Ogedegbe applauded the NBA President and his entourage for associating with them in their time of grief.
