A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Kano State, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, has promised to revamp the battered image of the judiciary if elected the president of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Mahmoud who also called for a thorough cleansing of the judiciary, lamented the situation where corrupt politicians who have been incriminated in foreign courts, manoeuvre their ways through our local courts, adding that such was very embarrassing for the nation.

He stated these at the Middle-Belt Lawyers’ Forum which was held recently in the Federal Capital City, Abuja, where he expressed the need for members of the Bar to join the current war against corruption.

“It will be business unusual. Let’s join hands together and re-define the Bar. The NBA under my leadership will strive for a clean judiciary. Every one of us owes it a duty to contribute to the upliftment of the judiciary”, he said.

He also spoke on the justice sector and in particular, the criminal justice system. Acording to him, they have reached a level of dysfunction that is inconsistent with the working of a modern democratic state, and therefore unacceptable.

“We need to take the bull by the horn and reposition our profession. We must raise our standards and be more serious in enforcing them”, he added.
