Benue State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the surge in crime rate in the state including the recent murder of one of its members, Peter Gbetuha.

Gbetuha was shot and killed on Thursday last week in front of his father’s house, located at Katsina-Ala Street in Makurdi by gunmen, who rode on a motorcycle and also made away with his handsets after shooting him.

The association equally called on the police and other law enforcement agencies to be alive up to their responsibilities of protecting lives and property of citizens “rather than serving as errand boys to wives of political office holders and celebrated party thugs.”

The chairman, Mike Assoh, in a statement on Tuesday, said, “Few weeks ago, Ternenge Labe, a pharmacist, also an aspiring member of the legal profession in the final stage of his training at the Law School, was shot by armed men at his pharmacy in Gboko.”

NBA called on the Inspector General of Police and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria  to order a full scale investigation to unravel the mystery and motives behind the murder of Gbetuha and bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to justice.

It urged the national body of the NBA to add its voice to that of the state chapter to call on the relevant bodies to act on the matter.
