The Borno State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association has called on the relevant authorities at all levels to ensure the speedy resolution of the crisis that have made judiciary workers go on strike, thus crippling activities in courts.

The Chairman of the Maiduguri branch of the association, Abdulwasiu Alfa, made this call on Monday while speaking during the Annual Law Week of Maiduguri/Biu branches of the association.

Alfa lamented that the strike, which had paralysed courts nationwide, had hindered administration of justice.

He noted that the lingering security challenges in the state had posed a lot of challenges to the administration of justice in general and legal practice in particular.

He said, “It has succeeded in crippling a substantial aspect of our means of livelihood; it has, in fact, threatened our values and essence. Today, legal practice is narrowed to the state capital only. No one gets briefs outside Maiduguri. Legal practitioners are in a very precarious and vulnerable situation.”

He explained that the annual law week provided a platform for members of the legal profession to acquire and improve their skills and knowledge in their field of practice within their domain for enhanced productivity.

Alfa said the theme of the discussion for the week revolved around the application of the Borno State High Court Civil Procedural Rules 2012.

“The choice of the theme is apt. There is a compelling need for the bar and the bench to clearly understand the spirit and letters as well as the intent of the above orders in the rules. Only few of us understand the rules and even less appreciate it. This is the only avenue for us to understand and appreciate it,” he added.

Governor Kashim Shettima, who declared the workshop open, said the NBA was one of the most respected professional associations in Nigeria because it had consistently remained the voice of the voiceless and always offered a shoulder for the distressed in the society to lean on.

The governor, who was represented at the occasion by the state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Kaka Shehu Lawan, said his government would continue to partner the association in the dispensation of justice.
