THE National Assembly has transmitted the National Health Bill to President Goodluck Jonathan for assent, it was disclosed yesterday.

The bill will establish a basic health care fund through deduction of an additional one percent of Nigeria’s Consolidated Revenue Account, CRA, for primary health care, if assented to by the President.

This is in addition to the expected counterpart funding contribution from the states and local governments.

Special Assistant to the President on House of Representatives Matters, Saudatu Sani, described the bill as ‘an important crossroads’ in the development of the country’s health sector.

The former lawmaker hailed President Jonathan for his non-interference in the affairs of the National Assembly and canvassed cordial executive-legislature relations.

Speaking on behalf of the Health Sector Reform Coalition, Executive Secretary, Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria, HERFON, Dr. Muhammed Lecky, said implementation of the bill will save the lives of three million women and children over a five year period.

He said the bill would increase funding; address inequities and respond better to the health needs of Nigerians.
