Those who use people living with disabilities to solicit money from the public will now be liable to a six-month imprisonment, among other punishments, even as a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities is to be established.

The punishment was the decision of the Senate and the House of Representatives as contained in the harmonized bill passed by the two chambers of the National Assembly that would be sent to President Goodluck Jonathan for assent.

The bill contains provisions that would ensure that the disabled are protected from discrimination and harmful treatment; have access to free education at all levels, basic health care, and employment, among others.

The harmonized bill seeks to ensure that it is only persons living with disabilities that would benefit from government package and be fully integrated into the society while a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities established for them, and headed by a physically challenged person, as Chairman.
