Shukor Abu-Bakar, a Malaysian deputy prosecutor, said on Tuesday that a man and his son were sentenced to 18 and 12 years imprisonment respectively for supporting terrorist activities.

He said that Kamardin Hashim, Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge, handed down the sentences, after the two pleaded guilty to the crime.

The deputy prosecutor said the father and son, identified as Murad Halimmuddin, 49, and his son Abu Daud, 25, were among the six terrorist suspects arrested by police on April 5 in the state of Kedah.

He said they were accused of recruiting Malaysians to support Islamic State and participating in plot to launch attacks against installations in Malaysia, that are deemed un-Islamic.

Hashim said the four other suspects pleaded not guilty and the judge set the start of the trial hearings for Aug. 28.

Ahmad Zahid-Hamidi, Home Affairs Minister, noted that Malaysian police have arrested more than 100 terrorism suspects, since they began a crackdown against Islamic State supporters in 2013.

The minister said there are 61 Malaysian nationals fighting with Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq.
