Governor Ayodele Fayose

A writ of summons from an Ado Ekiti High Court on Tuesday prevented the Ekiti State House of Assembly from giving Governor Ayodele Fayose the nod to constitute Local Government Caretaker Committees’ Chairmen and members.

At the plenary, which was the maiden sitting of the House since Fayose came on board as the governor, the All Progressives Congress (APC)-dominated Assembly also did not deliberate on the issue regarding the nominated commissioners since it was not included on the Order Paper.

Fayose, had in a letter to the Speaker, Hon. Adewale Omirin, had sought the approval of the House to constitute caretaker committees to man the 16 local government areas of the State, following the expiration of the tenure of ex-Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Calling the attention of the House to the Court summons, the Chairman House Committee on Legal Matters and Local Government Affairs, Mr. Adedeji Odu, said a case had been instituted by aggrieved 35 council bosses constituted by the Fayemi-led government.

After being dissolved, the aggrieved chairmen approached the State High Court, seeking interpretation regarding their constitution and tenure.

Odu cited Order 54(5) of the Standing Order of House, “which states that the Assembly cannot deliberate on a matter pending in the Law Court. Therefore the matter regarding the Local Government in the State be set aside until the court decides the pending suit before it.”

Joined in the suit include the Governor, the State Attorney-General, Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly and the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

In the letter sent by the Governor to the House, the Commissioners’ Nominees included: Mr. Owoseni Ajayi as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kayode Oso as Commissioner for Transport and Chief Toyin Ojo as Commissioner for Finance.

However, the State House of Assembly yesterday also approved for Governor Fayose, access to N2 billion out of the N220 billion Central Bank Business Loan to the 36 states of the federation.
