LAWYERS in Anambra State were excited yesterday following the commencement of the sitting of the Court of Appeal in Awka. No fewer than 50 cases are to be decided during the period the two panels of the court would sit in the area.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief  J. O. Nnadi said it was a huge relief for lawyers in the state that the court was brought down to Awka, noting that most of the cases being handled by the Court of Appeal in Enugu emanated from Anambra State. He said: “One is overjoyed that the Court of Appeal is sitting in Awka. This is because statistics show that most of the cases we go to Enugu to handle actually emanated from Anambra State.”

Another Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Anthony Chukwuemeka Anaenugwu commended the decision of the court to come to Awka. He said: “We are very happy to be here today, being the very first time in the history of the Court of Appeal Enugu Judicial Division to sit in Awka “In those old days when we started practice, I was privileged to know  one occasion when the Supreme Court sat at Enugu.

I think it is in the same spirit that the Court of Appeal moved from Enugu to sit in Awka, thereby bringing justice nearer to the litigants. The litigants are now saved the cost and inconveniences of going to Enugu. “I must say that the credit goes to the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Helen M. Ogunwumiju for her foresight in making sure that the Court of Appeal sits throughout this week in Awka. “Anambra state has always had more than 80 per cent of the cases pending at the Court of Appeal Enugu”.
