A member of the House of Representatives representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State in the National Assembly, Lazarus Ogbee, has urged lawmakers to oppose proposals for emergency powers for President Muhammadu Buhari, warning that it posed a danger to the survival of the nation’s democracy.
The lawmaker gave the warning in his country home Amagu Amaeziekwe in Ezza South Local Government Area of the state, while fielding questions from newsmen on the state of the nation.
He said, “The powers of the President today is well enough for him to take care of the leadership of the country till the expiration of his tenure, the powers so inherent to the president are enough to turn around the economy of Nigeria or to do whatever he wants to do to move it forward
“My position is that I will oppose such proposals and I will canvass for people to oppose such proposals, we are talking about democracy and not militocracy, it is not oligarchy.
“It is not a military regime, it is democracy, and if the President of the country seeks for more powers, we will resist him. I personally will resist him by voting against it and will canvass other lawmakers on the floor of the House to resist that.”
