SPEAKER  of the House of Representatives,  Yakubu Dogara, has promised Nigerians that all the 122 bills and 200 laws reviewed by the House Committee on Law Reforms would be passed by the end of the first quarter of next year.

The speaker made this disclosure when he received the interim report of the committee from the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative Studies, NILS, Dr. Ladi Hamalai, in Abuja.

Dogara expressed satisfaction in Dr Hamalai’s competence and the committee members’ dedication and commitment which produced a professional touch to the enormous work presented.

According to him, democracy is all about rule of law and due process and any democracy can only be as buoyant as the laws in place.

Hamalai, while submitting the report, said the document,  which was an outcome of thorough research, commitment and dedication, produced an extensive and in-depth material which would go a long way in assisting the House of Representatives to achieve  its legislative agenda.

She explained that the committee was able to review over 200 pieces of acts in the laws of the federation and produced 122 draft bills for the consideration of the House of Representatives.

“While some of the legislations require repeals, some require amendments and some consolidations and reforms, while a few new bills were introduced as a result of review of existing laws,” she said.

She explained that the drafted bills and repeals were also done in tabular form for ease of work for future user, adding that the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, was approached to provide logistics support.
