Organised Labour has frowned at the unilateral decision to cut the salaries of workers, especially by Governors amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Labour said the move to slash salaries has reduced the purchasing powers of workers and worsened their economic condition.

It argued this action contravenes the Nigeria Labour Laws and that of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention on equal pay for equal work done.

The Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employee (AUPCTRE) stated this at the end of its 24th Plenary Session of the National Governing Council (NGC) meeting.

AUPCTRE, an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress, warned Governors against cutting workers’ salaries, saying that a continuation of the policy will invoke the collective strength of labour force.

The union, in the communiqué signed by its President, Benjamin Anthony and General Secretary, Sikiru Waheed, asked the Federal Government to stop the privatisation of public utilities.

It urged the government to reverse this treacherous agenda as most of the organisations already privatised have only resulted in loss of jobs and untold hardship for Nigerians.
