EFCC to arraign Rickey Tarfa next week

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will arraign a Lagos-based lawyer, Rickey Tarfa (SAN), before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of a Lagos State High Court in Igbosere next week, The PUNCH has learnt.

It will be recalled that Tarfa was arrested by the EFCC last week for allegedly hiding two Beninoise suspects – Nazaire Gnanhoue and Modeste Finagnon – in his Mercedes Benz Sports Utility Vehicle.

The suspects were alleged to have fraudulently converted some equipment belonging to a manufacturing firm, Rana Prestige Nigeria Limited, for their own use.

Following Tafar’s arrest, however, some senior lawyers including some state chapters of the NBA, had lambasted the EFCC for arresting the lawyer.

However, a senior EFCC detective told one of our correspondents on the condition of anonymity that Tarfa was to blame and not the anti-graft agency.

He said, “What happened on that day was that we went to arrest two Beninoise suspects but we stood outside the court premises because court was in session. When the suspects saw us, they remained on the premises of the court and Tarfa put them in his vehicle and turned on his air conditioner.

“They remained in the vehicle from around 11am to 5pm. Within that time, Tarfa was making a series of telephone calls. At some point, when the fuel in his vehicle finished, he sent for petrol, all in a bid to obstruct justice.

“We finally went into the court premises and arrested all of them. There is no law that says you cannot arrest someone within the court premises. It is only when the court is sitting that you are not allowed to go to the court. We will charge him for obstruction of justice and attempting to pervert the course of justice latest by Thursday next week.”

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), on Wednesday in Abuja, led a delegation to the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu to possibly discuss the matter.
