THE Nigerian Army has resumed the prosecution of 19 senior officers of the service facing prosecution for alleged offences in the ongoing operation against the Boko Haram in the North- East.

One of the lawyers familiar with the case said that the Army authorities resumed the trial at the Ikeja Cantonment, Ikeja on Monday after a long wait.

The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army convened the General Court Martial to try 23 officers of the Army for various offfences under the directive of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah, (retd.) in October, 2014.

The accused officers became agitated when their trial became stalled because of the alleged assignment of some of the court officers to other military duties.

Some of the accused officers whose cases are still pending are Brig. Gen. J.O. Akomolafe, Col. A. Laguda, Col. V.O. Ita, Col. I.B. Maina, Lt. Col. I.A. Aboi, Lt. Col. C.A. Magaji, Lt. Col. N.N. Orok, and Lt. Col. O.O. Agwu.

Other officers include Lt. Col. I.M. Kabir, Lt. Col. M.H. Abubakar, Lt. Col. A.A. Egbejule, Lt. Col. A.M. Adetuyi, and other soldiers in the ranks of major, captain and lieutenant.

The source said that the officers were appealing to the Army authorities to give them the privilege of a speedy trial in consonance with the military tradition.

It was stated that the officers who have been in detention since then, had missed their promotions aside from the fact that they had being placed on half salary.

Our correspondent could not get the Public Relations Officer of the 81 Division, Lt. Col. Kingsley Samuel, to speak on the resumed trial. He did not pick calls to his mobile telephone line and did not respond to a text message on the issue as of the time of filing the story by 6:40 pm on Monday.
