Anambra State branch of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, yesterday lived up to its threat to resume the strike suspended in March this year by putting the court complexes across the state under lock.

The union suspended the strike, following an agreement reached with the state government but by yesterday, JUSUN said the government had reneged on the terms of agreement.

Litigants at the state high court, including politicians who had matters at the Election Petition Tribunal, which is located in the judiciary complex, went home disappointed as the gates of the High Court complex were firmly locked.

In a notice pasted on the gate of the court, JUSUN regretted government’s failure to comply fully with the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, which government entered into with the union.

It also condemned government’s inability to release one-third of arrears of capital votes for the first quarter to Anambra State Judiciary Service Commission as contained in paragraph 8 (a) of the MoU.

A statement by JUSUN vice chairman, Comrade Blessing Nwosu, and financial secretary, Comrade Tony Ughanze, said: “Union, hereby, resumes the suspended strike with effect from May 25 and, therefore, directs the union members to stay at home, pending full compliance of MoU.”

Chief Registrar of Anambra High Court, Mrs. Doris Ezeani, had last Friday hinted of the impending strike, expressing sadness over the plan of the workers to embark on another strike soon after a prolonged one.

She, however, said there was nothing the judiciary could do about it, noting that the strike would affect justice delivery in the state and the morale of the workers, who were eager to work.
