A team of lawyers, led by Mr. Olu Omotayo, who is also the Zonal Director of the Civil Liberties Organization in the South-East will formally move the bail application for the 11 members of the Biafra Zionists Federation, BZF, currently remanded at Enugu prisons over an alleged attempt to declare Republic of Biafra.

Omotayo confirmed to Vanguard yesterday that “all is now set for us to move the application tomorrow (today).”

The 11 members of the group are facing a three-count charge of treason, while their leader, Mr. Benjamin Onwuka, a lawyer, is facing additional count charge alone, thus bringing the number of his charge to four.

It will be recalled that sometime in December last year, the national chairman of Biafra Zionist Federation , Comrade Cyril Onyia, led other members to carry out peaceful protest in Enugu.

They also forwarded their protest letter which they handed over to Omotayo to Amnesty International in London and United States Consular General in Lagos over Federal Government’s continued, unlawful detention of Benijamin Onwuka and 10 others.

It stated that “When the criminal charge against them came up on December 8, 2014, it was adjourned to December 18, 2014, for argument on the bail application of the accused persons.

“On December 18, 2014, the court did not sit but the case was adjourned to a far date of February 9, 2015.

“The was a ploy to frustrate the agitation and demands of the Zionist Movement and the plan is to keep our leader in detention until after the so called general elections.”

Arraigned were Benjamin Onwuka, male of Block 3, Flat 1, Railway quarters Enugu, Ndubisi Nnamushi, male, of No 31C Onuasata Road Enugu, Kelvin Ekeh, male of Otufu Emene Isiugu village Enugu, Japhet Nwodo, male of Nmoji Village Nkpor, Idemili LGA, Anambra State, Fidelis Nwonu, male, of No. 8 Abako Street Nkpor Agwuo, Anambra State, Paulinus Uzoegbu, male, of No. 6 Onyanu Styreet , Okpoko Onitsha Anambra State, Sunday Chukwuma, male of Agulere Anambra State, Uduma Uduma, male of Obosi Idemili North LGA Anambra State, Betrand Obieke, male of No. 7, Nwafor lane, Nkpor Agu, Onitsha, Anambra State, Abraham Ugwu, male, of No. 500 Edwin Odi Street, Okpor, Onitsha, Anambra State and Ijaga Samson, male of No. 17, Mission Road Nkpo-Agu, Onitsha, Anambra.

The prosecution among others, stated that on or about June 4, 2014 at Nike Grammar School, Enugu within the jurisdiction of the Federal high court of Nigeria conspired to do an illegal act to wit: you agreed and unlawfully armed yourselves with dangerous weapons with intent to capture the Enugu State Broadcasting Service, ESBS Radio House and make a live broadcast for secession of Biafra as a nation, you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 37 (2) of the Criminal Code Act LFN 2004 and punishable under the same section of the same Act.
